Photos: The Elegance of Isla Borremeo in Italy

This peacock must compete for attention with the elegant villas and gardens of the Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore, a the foothills of the Alps.   The villas have been in the same family since the 1600's and are open for tours.

On Isola Bella, the gardens are accented by white peacocks. They are every bit as proud of their plumage as their colorful cousins.
The elegant terraces of the gardens of Isola Bella cascade down to the lake. The town of Stresa is visible in the distance.  Unfortunately, the day we were there was heavily overcast, but it was a delightful visit nonetheless.
Isola  Bella and Isola Madre have villas and gardens to tour.  Isola Pescatori is the only island that is inhabited, but has only a couple hundred residents.   It was originally a fishing village, and it has charming lakefront restaurants for lunch.  There are a few small inns for overnight stays.  The islands are very small, totaling only 50 acres (20 hectares) combined. The stairways in the gardens have the weathered look of the centuries.
