Argentina is the polo capital of the world. The best polo players and polo ponies train and play here. Rider and horse move as though they are one animal, with a thrilling combination of coordination, grace and power.
Who do you think considers themselves to be more handsome, horse or rider?
The polo fields and stadium in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires host the Palermo Open championships each November and December, the most prestigious polo tournament in the world. We have attended several times. After an afternoon of polo, we like to go to Pizza y Espuma our favorite neighborhood restaurant in Palermo. A perfect end to a perfect day.
Some of the polo matches are held in the main stadium, and some are held on an adjacent field where you can stand at ground level right next to the horses as they thunder by.
The polo ponies are as majestic as they are athletic.
This is a photo from the apartment where our son lived. It overlooked the Palermo polo stadium, shown in this photo from his balcony. In the foreground is the largest mosque in Latin America. To the right is the Hippodromo and then Rio de la Plata, which is near the Aeropuerto Jorge Newberry.
The grand architectural style of this building seems rather overdone, as normally cities do not erect buildings this ornate just to house the water department. Last week we showed a close up of one of the entrances to this building, so we decided to show the building facade this week.

It's a different sport. There are horses all over Haninge where I live but I have never seen anyone perform this sport. Some quality photos in this post.
Great action shots of the polo ponies. Enjoying the mini travel shots on Sundays. Thanks
Fabulous shots Julie! I have never been to a polo match. Those horses are magnificent.
Amazing photos Julie! You are an excellent photographer!!
Great post! I especially like the view on the 2nd shot and the building in the last pic, which I don't remember at all!
JM,
It is easy to bypass the grand water department building, whose official name is Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes If you are walking from Recoleta to the Congress building, the main street is Avenida Callao. Just one block to the right, at Avenida Cordova, is the water department building, but can't see it from Avenida Callao so you might not know it is there.
Many maps list it, but who would think by looking at a map that names a water building that it is worth the effort to walk one block west to see a spectacular building.
i am argentine and i live in Buenos Aires.....thank for that beautiful photos.....
I think I might have been with you when you took those polo shots! And, of course the Water Works Building. I have some great shots of that one too.
Sharon,
You are correct. The polo photos were taken on the trip on which you joined us. What a wonderful time it was.
The polo shots are amazing. So much action. And I did love the horse and rider query as to who thinks he is most handsome. I think the rider wins. Though in truth I think the horse takes the prize.
Here's just the right place for travelers could stay when they visit Argentina.
