Photos: The Majesty of Perito Moreno

The blue color of glaciers is alluring.  The blue color is caused by the weight of the ice squeezing out the air particles and leaving ice that has more density and that absorbs the other colors in the spectrum and reflecting blue. This is true of glaciers wherever they appear.   This glacier is in Patagonia, Argentina.
This is an area of Perito Moreno Glacier that is called "the balconies."  There is a trail with lots of overlooks directly across from the face of the glacier.  Visitors can easily walk and watch different sections of the glacier.  Some parts of the glacier calve off and crash right in front of people watching.  This photo shows Julie Pace and Taylor Selden enjoying the scene and imagining different objects and animals that the shapes of the glacial formations resemble.  We made this trip south while visiting Taylor after he moved to Argentina.
In addition to looking at he glacier, we hiked on the glacier.  This is a photo of the crampons that we strapped to our chows or boots.
This is a view of the Perito Moreno Glacier inside a national park, taken from the Los Notros Lodge.  We loved staying right inside the park, with views of the glacier and mountains in various types of light.  The alternative is to stay in the town of Calafate, about an hour away.
Taylor Selden, Stuart Selden and Julie Pace follow our guide as they hike down the glacier towards the lake before catching a boat back to our lodge.

The colors of the glacier are amazing! I think "Majesty" is the perfect word.

El Calafate was one of our favorite destinations. The town has whatever you need, including some good restaurants, but the lake and glaciers are otherworldly. We saw Presidenta Kirchner there.

I agree with Judy regarding the word majesty. This is such a stunning place! I didn't hike there but even so, I didn't want to leave. :-)

Really amazing photos with that gorgeous blue color. I want to view this again in July or August.

What a fantastic experience this must have been. I just watched an Art Wolfe special where he photographed a glacier.
