I decided to post a few more photos from Ethiopia this week. We took a day trip from Addis Ababa, the capitol, to the Blue Nile Gorge. At the first scenic overlook, not surprisingly, there were some locals selling baskets. Buying local crafts is a good way to get people to pose for photos, and the crafts make excellent gifts.
Birds of prey used the up draft winds from the canyon to glide and circle around to try to spot a small rodent or other food.
We were surprised at how green the countryside was in much of Ethiopia. Mny areas looked more like Tuscany than the drought-stricken land a few years back when most people became aware of everyday living conditions in Ethiopia.
The festivals in Bhutan are colorful and dramatic. It is worthwhile to time a trip to Bhutan to coincide with one of the festivals. The festivals feature music, dance, and colorful masks and costumes. We visited Bhutan at the time of the festival in Punahka, the first of the season.
This photo shows a giant thangka that is covering the wall of the temple. It is made of fabric and is unfurled and raised for the ceremonies. It was impossible to move back far enough to get a photo of the entire thangka without the tree in the courtyard obscuring part of it. It was impressive to watch a large group of people remain and help to take the thangka down at the end of the ceremony.
Bhutan is a country that captivated us because of its details. There is a giant monument to Buddha on a mountainside overlooking the capitol, and some of the temples are impressive in scale, but mostly it is the details of the people, their dress, customs, houses and temples that is fascinating to explore, observe, and, for my husband and me, to photograph. The way mothers and older siblings wrap babies in textiles, as shown above is but one example. Fancy baby strollers would be of little use in the rugged terrain of Bhutan.
The Himalayan countryside of Bhutan is largely mountainous, with people living in terraced plots on the sides of the mountains or in the valleys, which are limited to a very small part of the land area. It was tricky even to find a level spot for an international airport in the entire country, as jetliners have to snake its way down a valley to reach the runway.Julie ScottsdaleDailyPhoto.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14540864800524356267noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7181331765063447388.post-23784818581556787112014-12-28T02:30:00.000-07:002014-12-28T02:30:00.931-07:00Ethiopian Scenes

Some village houses were brightly painted. Unpaved streets are common, although the Chinese are building lots of roads in the country to connect the towns and cities much better than only a few years ago. Some people said that the Chinese are using their own prison labor for the construction crews.
This woman lived on a farm. The farm huts are in the background. As reflected by the cross around her neck, Ethiopia is largely a Christian country. The Piaristenkeller restaurant features a huge wine cellar that occupies the tunnels under the monastery that used to be connected to the church next door. They had wine barrels for tastings that were large enough to sit inside. It was Christmas in Vienna, so of course I had my winter coat.
The wine vaults deep underground are elaborately paneled in fine wood, with brass hardware. Many of the areas for wine storage are set up like a safety deposit box, requiring two keys for someone to open and remove the wine. It must be very expensive wine.
The Piaristenkeller Restaurant also has a museum that is a collection of hats from the Imperial Hat Collection, as the ancestors of the owners of the restaurant were friends of the Austrian royal family and ended up with many of the royal hats. The restaurant includes an area where guests can help themselves to a hat to wear for the evening, if they want to play dress up with their dinner. Perito Moreno Glacier, and the Glacier National Park in Patagonia, Argentina, offers a rare chance to walk across the top of a glacier. Most glaciers are impressive sights to look at from just below them, but at Perito Moreno they have guides that lead groups on paths they have made right on the glaciers. Obviously care must be taken not to fall into the cracks in the ice.
This is a view of he town of Hvar on the island of Hvar. It was a Venetian town for centuries. The long low building in the foreground was the arsenal during Venetian rule. Each Venetian town had an arsenal where Venetian ships could come into port and get spare parts and repairs for the ships.
Hungary has been on the eastern end of Christian Europe at times during past centuries, and perhaps that has led to monuments such as this that proclaim the predominate faith.
This is one of the many species of puffer fish. We enjoyed snorkeling with marine life during our Un-Cruise Adventure cruise in the Sea of Cortez. The puffer fish were easier to photograph than many other fish because they seemed to float by and check us out.
Swimming with sea lions, as well as cruising with whales, were the highlights of the trip. The sea lions swirled around us playfully. Similar to dogs and children, the young sea lions do explore with their mouths. One of them actually opened his mouth around the lens of my husband's underwater camera while he was shooting video.
One of the first photo tips that our National Geographic photographer-tour leader, Ira Block, gave us was to take people pictures by setting up a tripod in a desired location and letting people walk into the scene where you want to take the photo. If they consent to be photographed, they will often pose.

This tip worked well for me. On the first day I did not even make it inside the temple, as I used my time to take a series of people pictures from the covered bridge leading into the temple. I had a steady stream of subjecs who were walking home from the festival in the temple.

The people of Bhutan were friendly, and the children were especially charming, of course. Although I did not make it into the temple on the first day, on the second day I enjoyed the entire festival from the temple courtyard.
I mentioned a few weeks ago in a post that we went to Bhutan on a trip timed to enable a visit to the Punakha festival, the first of the season. The first two photos are from that festival. It makes sense that the season's first festival would be in Punakha because it is at a lower elevation and is warmer than most of Bhutan.
A monk carries two of the drums used in the music and dance in the temple, or dzong. The Punakha dzong was built in 1637 and its full name in Bhutanese means Palace of Great Happiness. The four story high quilted thangka that covered the palace facade inside the courtyard is partially visible behind the spectators in the photo above.
This is not Arizona's Grand Canyon. It is the Blue Nile Gorge. It reminded us a little of home, although the area gets more rainfall and has greener vegetation than our home state of Arizona. The Blue Nile Gorge can be visited on a day trip from the Ethiopia's capitol city, Addis Ababa. We took an Un-Cruise Adventures cruise of Mexico's Sea of Cortez in February and loved it. We saw whales every day, and also enjoyed the times that we landed by zodiac on pristine, isolated beaches, such as this one.
The rocky coastline of Baja California had lots of tide pools. Our cruise ship is in the background. It held only about 50 guests, which is a great size for adventure cruise ships, rather than the giant ships where there is standing in line with crowds at times.
The Chichi market, held on Thursdays and Sundays, is one of Guatemala's most popular tourist attractions. Chichi is short for Chichicastenango. We enjoyed a Sunday visit to Guatemala City. Our local guide in Antigua, the charming town where we stayed, said that the weekends were the only time to visit Guatemala City because traffic is much less than trying to see the city during a work day.
